Spotting the Spirit of the Constraint

Man sieht das, wonach man sucht. Liegt es also nur daran, dass wir immer wieder aufs Neue nach dem Geist von Ougrapo suchen, dass wir überall Aktivitäten entdecken, die dem so ähnlich sind?
Ed Fella zeichnet hundert Bilder an hundert aufeinander folgenden Tagen mit genau festgelegten Farbstiften (demnächst auf www.ougrapo.de). Anne Burdick, durch die Sophie vor über zehn Jahren zum ersten Mal von der Gruppe Oulipo erfahren hat, erwähnt „Hint Fiction”, Romane in 25 Wörtern oder weniger. Eine Studentin befragt Sophie vor ein paar Tagen zu Ougrapo, ihre Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich irgendwie mit diesem Thema. Sicher nicht durch Zufall stoßen wir auf das Conditional Design Manifesto – formuliert durch eine Gruppe Gleichgesinnter, die sich jeden Dienstag treffen, um ein Plakt zu machen.
Und dann ist da noch die neue Bibel vom Verlag Hermann Schmidt, Nea Machina. Zwei Gestalter haben – bewusst oder unbewusst – die „Exercises de style” von Raymond Queneau auf die visuelle Spitze getrieben und ein Thema in 1000 Variationen abgebildet. Dazu gibt es eine Anleitung zum Kreativsein, eine Maschine. Was hier als Maschine benannt, ist das oulipistischste aller Werkzeuge: die bewusst gewählte Einschränkung (constraint).
Ougrapo lebt! Überall!

You always find what you are looking for. So, is it just because we are searching for the spirit of Ougrapo again and again that we recently spotted all these activities connected to our ideas.
Ed Fella makes one hundred drawings on one hundred consecutive days with a fixed set of color pencils (coming soon on ougrapo.de). Anne Burdick – the one who introduced Sophie over ten years ago to Oulipo – mentions »Hint Fiction«, stories with 25 words or less. Not by accident we hit the »Conditional Design Manifesto« – written by a group of like-minded who are meeting every Tuesday to design a poster.
And then there is the new bibel of the German Publisher Hermann Schmidt called »Nea Machina«. Consciously or not – two designers have exessively pursued the »Exercise de style« and have created 1000 variations of a simple visual/verbal theme. With it they deliver an instructions manual, the creativity machine. What they call »machine« is the most ougrapoistic of all tools: the consciously chosen constraint. Ougrapo is alive! Everywhere!
